Why Modi Is Saying No to Trump’s Demand to Stop Buying Russian Oil

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stirred international headlines, this time urging India to immediately stop purchasing crude oil from Russia. In his recent public statements, Trump criticized New Delhi’s continued energy trade with Moscow, suggesting it undermines Western sanctions and strengthens Russia’s war economy amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

However, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a firm stance — refusing to bow to U.S. pressure. Here’s why.

India's Energy Security Comes First

India imports over 85% of its oil needs, and Russian crude has become a vital part of that supply due to steep discounts offered since the Ukraine war began. With inflation concerns and growing energy demand in a fast-developing economy, India views this trade as essential for its economic stability.

Modi has emphasized that “India’s decisions are based on national interests,” making it clear that energy security for over 1.4 billion citizens cannot be compromised under external pressure.

Non-Aligned Yet Strategic Diplomacy

India has maintained a delicate balance in global geopolitics — it condemns violence in Ukraine but has abstained from voting on anti-Russian resolutions at the UN. Modi's government is pursuing strategic autonomy, meaning it refuses to take sides in global conflicts and instead focuses on pragmatic relationships with both the West and Russia.

This neutral stance helps India safeguard its long-term global partnerships while still defending its sovereign right to engage in economic deals that benefit its people.

U.S. Interests vs. Indian Sovereignty

Trump's demands are being seen in India as an overreach into its foreign policy. Indian officials argue that while they respect U.S. concerns, Washington cannot dictate Delhi’s energy choices. Additionally, many Indian analysts believe Trump’s push is partly political, aimed at appealing to American voters ahead of the 2024 elections and not necessarily grounded in diplomacy.

What Lies Ahead?

As tensions rise, the U.S.-India relationship may face new tests. But Modi’s refusal signals a shift: India, once heavily influenced by superpowers, is now asserting itself as an independent global voice.

Whether Trump returns to office or not, India’s message remains loud and clear — strategic decisions will be made in New Delhi, not Washington.
